That process is greatly slowed down because when I drag huge multi-GB folders from Mac to QNAP, due to file system issues with Mac OS X, many invisible files like DS_Store and AppleDouble don't copy properly and they cause the whole file copy process to abort, and when this happens I can't ever be sure which files made it over and which didn't before the process aborted. HELP - IS THERE A WAY TO REDUCE THE DataVol1 back down to something like 12-14TB, in order to bring Storage Pool 1 back to about 5-10% unallocated? I can't wipe QNAP and start over because it could take several weeks to manually copy everything back onto the QNAP from a multitude of smaller drives and computers around the house. Also, since Storage Pool 1 is now below the lowest threshold setting of 1% for "limited space warnings" my QNAP would keep beeping all the time to alert me about the situation until I turned off alerts. But now I can't find a way to go back, and I can't use Snapshots.

My REAL PROBLEM is that I forgot about the need to leave some unallocated space in the Storage Pool for Snapshots, and I clicked to max out DataVol1 at 16TB. Since the Drobo is case sensitive and can have duplicate files, it's easier to copy from QNAP to the Drobo than the other way around - plus the QNAP is plugged into my 4KTV via HDMI and already has a lot of my media files installed on it, and Drobo can't act like a Media PC. I haven't figured out the software I'll need to backup the QNAP onto the network Drobo 5N yet, but that's for another time. That way I can use my 16TB Drobo 5N for network time machine backups of my MacBook and iMac, plus a backup of the QNAP (with our DVD's and iTune library). It then changed from shareware to a commercial trialware application published by Bombich Software.

With the release of Mac OS X Lion in 2010, Bombich was receiving 120 support inquiries a day for Carbon Copy Cloner. Tonight I decided to just expand the DataVol1 and use my QNAP to store all of my ripped DVDs, 6TB iTunes library, and archived files. After prototyping it in AppleScript, Carbon Copy Cloner 1.0 was released through VersionTracker on January 18, 2002. I wasn't sure if later on I would want to create more data volumes, so I left it unallocated for the time being. Of that 12TB I was only using about 8TB, with about 4TB free. But I only had DataVol1 set up to use 12TB of space, leaving me with 4TB of unallocated free space in the storage pool. This configuration gives me 16TB of potential storage in "Storage Pool 1" with RAID 5.

I'm waiting to do the most recent upgrade to the firmware that just came out, until I'm sure I won't lose more features, like when they dropped support for Twonky in the previous update. I have a QNAP TS-453A 4-bay with 4GB RAM and 4圆TB WD Red drives in it, with RAID 5 and thick provisioning, and it's been running great for the past year.
